During 2009-2010 some pupils at Barlows took part in a pollution forecasting project in conjunction with Liverpool City Council. The project involved pupils and their families receiving a text or email to advise them of the predicted and current pollution levels indicating if they were high or low.

The aim of the project was to keep parents, carers and pupils informed of the pollution levels to ensure that they could take appropriate action for members of their families, such as ensuring anyone who suffered from breathing difficulties was reminded to carry their medication with them.
